Liability & care of your tapes
We treat your tapes as irreplaceable — because they are. Here's what that looks like in practice, and what you should know about risks and our liability.
What we do to minimize risk
- Tapes are inventoried and photographed within 24 hours of arrival.
- Each tape stays in your customer's box until conversion — we don't pool tapes across customers.
- Workstations and decks are kept clean and humidity-controlled.
- Files are stored encrypted at rest and backed up to a second region daily.
What we cannot guarantee
Magnetic tape decays. Some tapes will arrive partially or wholly unreadable due to age, mold, or prior physical damage. If a tape cannot be recovered, we refund that tape's charge and notify you with a brief technical note explaining what we tried.
Shipping insurance
Round-trip shipping is tracked and insured up to $200/boxthrough UPS at no additional cost. For higher-value shipments (irreplaceable historical footage, large estate orders), email support@taperevive.com before shipping — we can arrange supplemental insurance.
Our liability cap
Our maximum liability for any cause is three (3) times the amount you paid for that order. See our Terms of Service for full details. We strongly recommend against shipping any single tape you would be devastated to lose without first contacting us for special handling.
Disposal of originals
If you choose "recycle for me" instead of returning originals, we work with a certified R2 e-waste processor. VHS tape contains chromium and other materials that should not go in household trash. We'll email you a disposal certificate.
